I t seems like last week when the busses stopped running, the bells ceased to ring and the classrooms emptied for summer. Now we're faced with back-to-school time again, and even a causal trip to Target last month (shelves stocked already!) reminded us that summers are short. I've always loved school and the back-to-school time of year: The smell of an open pack of loose-leaf notebook paper, the sound that my thermos made when I popped the lid off for the first time and the way my new clothes made me feel on the first day of school are memories I'll always be fond of. The pin- nacle of the back-to-school season was receiving a letter from my school. I would rip open the envelope and scan my schedule before dashing to the phone and dialing my friends. "Who do you have for homeroom? First period? And so on. It's that time of year — when kids have had their fill of sum- mer and are eager to see old friends again. I hope your fam- ily has made great summer memories and your kids are excited about a new school year. In a few weeks, we'll all be asking, "Where did the time go?" Chris Jones has always loved school despite what his report cards reflected. BY CHRIS JONES Ends & Beginnings
