www.FredericksburgParent.NET 7 Pouches' community corner Since its humble beginnings in a two-bedroom apartment in 2006, Mary's Shelter has helped expectant mothers— and their children—to get back on their feet by providing housing, parenting education and life skills classes. For up to three years, resi- dents can live in at Mary's Shelter while pursuing higher education or secur- ing a career. Mentors offer residents guidance and help them set realistic goals and timelines toward sustainable, independent living. A faith-based ministry, Mary's Shelter aims to share the love of Christ with its residents, as well as successfully impart the following: • An awareness of God's love for each person • Ensure the health of mother and baby • Inspire self-respect and personal motivation • Develop confident, loving and positive parenting • Foster a successful transition to independent living For those in the community who wish to help the shelter in its support of women and children, the How to Help tab on its website provides categories and listings of items the shelter needs. Items such as baby bottles, crib sheets, dia- pers and pullups, Tupperware and other household supplies are collected regularly by the shelter. Expectant mothers in need of temporary shelter should visit the Admission section of the website. The base- line requirement asks that you be least 18 years old and are motivated to make positive changes in your life.
