Arranging for a pediatrician brought home to me there was going to be an entirely new person in the world and I was going to be responsible for everything about her, especially her health, at day one, hour one, minute one. No pressure. All the baby magazines (there was no internet at the time) recommended interviewing prospective pediatricians and then carefully selecting the one that most closely matched your values. I dutifully began dialing for an inter- view appointment, but figured out fast that no pediatricians in the area had time for that kind of nonsense. I was going to be lucky to be accepted as a patient, not vice versa. And thus began the long journey of navigating the medical system for a child who was eventually diagnosed with a rare dis- ease, Charcot-Marie-Tooth. We don't want any parent to make that same journey unsupported. Chris Jones has put together a terrific issue on children's health to help local par- ents be aware of resources in the community. Check out the valuable infor- mation on post-partum support groups in Fredericksburg, and then read about local mother Dianna Flett's amazing effort to give our daughters a healthy emotional life. If you are looking for pediatricians' listings we maintain a great list of area pediatricians on our website, www.fredericksburgparent.net/guides. Good luck on your journey to giving your kids a healthy start and be sure to email us any resources you think the parenting community should know about. leighanne@fredericksburgparent.net Supporting Parents Still Matters letter from the publisher
