28 Fredericksburg Parent and Family • March 2024 This month marks 15 years since Mary Washington Healthcare opened Stafford Hospital, marking a significant addition to healthcare facilities located in this rapidly growing part of the Fredericksburg region. "I can remember walking the halls of Stafford Hospital the day before we opened it to the public," said Cathy Yabonski, Senior Vice President and Chief Ambulatory Operations Officer for Mary Washington Healthcare. In the years since the hospital opened, the growth in Stafford and the rest of the region hasn't stopped—and neither have Mary Washington Healthcare's constant efforts to ensure impor- tant healthcare services are as conveniently accessible as possible for area residents. "Our mission is to improve community health," Ms. Yablonski said. "Everything we do ties back to that." That mission has been the same since 1899, when the healthcare system got its start as an eight-room hospital in Fredericksburg. Today, the system has grown to include two hospitals, four emergency departments and more than 60 healthcare facilities and wellness services.
