Megan Walsh, our business development director, said to me yesterday, "Halloween is the Super Bowl for parents." Just like our favorite football game day, Halloween doesn't feature an offi cial day off from work, but it certainly demands energy me and planning from parents. In our October issue, we've packed in as much Halloween help as possible. Our Ask the Expert from Main Street Fredericksburg's Chris Stein shares the details of the Downtown Scarecrow Fes val, sponsored by the Rappahannock Rotary; Legacy; the FXBG Police Department, and our very own Fredericksburg Parent. For a detailed guide to the Scarecrow Fes val's month-long, bustling schedule, be sure to turn to page 12. This year we added a kazoo band during the Treats on the Streets Costume Stroll on October 28. We hope you and your kids will join us! And let's not forget our much-an cipated Fall Fes val list, by our calendar mom Caroline Murray. We've also thrown in some last-minute Halloween costume and party ideas to ensure your spooky month goes smoothly on pages 26 and 27. Looking ahead, Fredericksburg Parent is tackling the topic of family-friendly employ- ers and child care in January 2024. On Wednesday, October 25, we will be spon- soring a lunch focus group on paren ng and the workforce at the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce. A er we hear from you on what you need from employers to go back to work, or stay at work, we will put together a January issue on the latest resources for balancing work and family life, whether that's family-friendly policies, aff ordable child care or support services. Together, we will be crea ng a list recogniz- ing local family-friendly employers. Lunch is provided, but we are limi ng the focus group to 20. Employers and parents are welcome! Finally, a huge thank you to Alpha Delta Kappa, a sorority for teachers that called to let us know that they are dona ng to the Fredericksburg Area Imagina on Library, the local Dolly Parton Library affi liate this year. We con nue to fundraise to completely serve 22401 and the coun es of Staff ord and King George. We also would like to thank the many new subscribers to the FXBG Advance, our nonprofi t newsroom. We believe news should never be behind a pay wall, so it's free to get the latest balanced, bipar san and deeply researched informa on on local elec ons, local educa on and local government at fxbgadvance.com. The next 50 subscribers will get free subscriber yard signs! Warm regards, Leigh Anne Van Doren, publisher, Fredericksburg Parent
