www.FredericksburgParent.NET 7 Pouches' B O OK NO OK WRITTEN BY LENORA KRUK-MULLANAPHY Meet Lori Leigh Yarborough When author Lori Leigh Yarborough's son was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, she created the concept of "superpowers" to explain to him why he interacted with the world the way he did. That was the inception of "Nathan's Autism Spectrum Superpowers," which is accompanied by the colorful, kid-friendly illustrations by Natalie Merheb. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause social, communication and behav- ioral challenges. People with ASD may communicate, interact, behave and learn in different ways than most others. The learning, thinking and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can run the gamut of gifted to severely challenged. The blue-eyed, blond-haired subject of "Nathan's Autism Spectrum Superpowers" explains his ASD superpowers and how they affect him. It also describes ways his friends can help him out when these superpowers spiral out of control. Yarborough's book is a tool to help kids, family, friends and caregivers understand ASD and the struggles—and "super- powers"—that come with it. Yarborough is also the author of "Hannah's Down Syndrome Superpowers." Hannah, the superhero princess explains her Down Syndrome superpowers, how they affect her and how she's more like other kids than different. In "Xander's Cerebral Palsy Superpowers," the story revolves around the superhero and his dog, Oreo. Xander explains cerebral palsy, its causes and the four types, as well as how it affects him and his friends who also have cerebral palsy. He shows how he's an important member of his family and it's what he can do that matters. The books are part of the 139 Inspired Series to show all children they are wonderfully made. In this encouraging series for kids who respond to the world differently than oth- ers, kids will find themselves immersed in the easy-to-under- stand information and beautifully illustrated heroes of the books. The 139 series is written to help others understand the diagnoses, what life is like, how others can help and that they have the same hopes, dreams and desires as other kids.
