Several people have recently asked me if I'm still trying to lose weight. This got me thinking about the goals I set for myself when I started this process back in July 2012. Those goals were to weigh what I considered a “healthy weight” (175 lbs down from 268 lbs), run one mile, and wear a size 14 misses (These were all things I could do when I was 27). As I went through the process of researching weight loss surgery, meeting surgeons and talking to others who had the surgery some of these goals changed. I went from wanting to run one mile to a 5K, the surgeons set a weight goal of 150 lbs, and the BMI calculator set a weight goal of 136 lbs.

As of today, I have surpassed all of my initial goals. I weigh 167 lbs, I am running 2.5 miles on the treadmill in 30 minutes, and I am wearing between a size 6 and an 8. (To be honest, I've checked around and apparently universal sizing has increased over the years, so I'm sure the size 6 from 1994 would not fit me today. But I'm not complaining!)

The question still stands, “Do I want to lose more weight?” My answer isn't a simple yes or no. I am happy where I am with my weight and size, I feel GREAT, have a ton of energy and for the most part don't miss ice cream. Of course, the over achiever in me wants to surpass the surgeon's goal of 150 lbs in six months (not the 18 months suggested)!

Realistically, I don't think I can reach the BMI calculator's goal of 136 lbs, there just isn't that much of me left. However, I do want to run that 5K Turkey Trot with my kids. I went and bought some running shoes and downloaded a Couch to 5K app to help me train for it. The salesman at the running store was so nice and told me if I kept at it I could run a ½ marathon next year. That got my brain ticking. Me, Michelle the Turtle, run a ½ marathon? Really? 13.1 miles?! So to all my running friends: let me know your thoughts. I think I just set a new goal!
