My Experience at the Pentagon

June 21, 2013

Last Thursday, I was given an amazing opportunity. I presented at the Defense Senior Leader Spouse Conference at the Pentagon. The goal of my fashion presentation was to provide the ladies who were attending this 2-day conference something light and fun to end the day. Mission complete. Here are a few of my takeaways from the experience.

1 ledrew-pentagonAsk and you shall receive. When I committed to do this, I realized that it was also the perfect opportunity to showcase the products & services of other military and local businesses. The response to my request was overwhelming! By the time I dropped the last goody into the VIP bags, I had accumulated donated products, samples and discounted services from all over the world! Please take a minute to check out my official supporters: KiraKira Jewelry (NY), Monkee's of Fredericksburg, Vitalia Medspa (Falls Church), Julie McWilliams Photography (Stafford), Jewell (Christina Actis, NC), Homecoming Trunk Shows (Gia Ellis, NC), Rodan + Fields (Kendra Lewis, Japan), Stella & Dot (Carrie Moschetto, CA), Compelling Creations (Sue Ann Oltman, Fredericksburg), and Nomades (Angela Richwine, Fredericksburg).

2 Everyone likes to win. During my presentation, some of the donated products (from businesses mentioned above) were used as giveaways. It touched my heart to see these women excited to win. Despite our positions, careers and levels of responsibilities, we women share a common desire to connect, laugh, and even appreciate a freebie.

3 Girls just want to have fun. Despite my jittery nerves on "game-day," I had a blast! I enjoyed my time with these ladies so much because... they are real, grounded, sensitive, caring women, who like to laugh and have fun. Yes, they endure heavy burdens while their husbands are in command and are often in difficult situations that I can't fathom to comprehend, but it is refreshing to know that they are able to enjoy friendship, and even fashion, as much as the next girl.

4 Fashion refreshers are good for all! What did I cover? Spring 2013 Trends, Wardrobe Essentials, Favorite Fashion Tips, and How to Create More Outfits Using What You Already Have, just to name a few topics. The favorite was the presentation of makeover outfits (I used pieces from one of the attendees own wardrobe). These women are in the public eye all the time, and yet they were eager to learn new strategies and tips to put their most fashionable foot forward.

So, there you have it. It was the biggest thing I've done professionally and I loved every minute of it.
