H ealthy eyes and good vision play a critical role in how infants and children learn to see. Eye and vision problems in infants can cause development delays. Infants should have their first eye exam at 6 months of age, according to the American Optometric Asso- ciation (AOA). Access Eye Centers will be happy to refer you to an Ophthalmologist specializing in infant eye care. We recommend that you then schedule complete eye exams with an Optometrist at Access Eye Centers for your children at age 3 and just before they enter first grade at about age 5 or 6. Unfortunately, parents and educators often incorrectly assume that if a child passes a school screening, then there is no vision problem. However, many school vision screenings only test for distance vision. The AOA recommends that school age children, age 6-18, receive comprehensive optometric examinations every two years—more often if specific prob- lems or risk factors exist.
