16 Fredericksburg Parent and Family • January 2015 A new year can mean a new approach to life, and what we eat is often the biggest change we fo- cus on. With so many dietary directions that you can pursue, here are a few books that can make your experience easy and delicious! For those interested in vegetari- anism, Veganish: The Omnivore's Guide to Plant-based Cooking is a primer for making a smooth tran- sition to a vegetarian or vegan diet while still meeting your basic nutritional needs. The author combines healthy and delicious recipes with her personal story of managing a well-balanced diet. Through her guidance, you can avoid the obstacles while repli- cating her successes. The first fact you learn in The Mediterranean Diet for Every Day is that there is no one "Mediterranean Diet." With so many cultures surrounding the sea that the diet is named for, there are multiple avenues to take. The basic dietary staples of olive oil, seafood, fruits, veg- etables, and lean proteins have been proven to lead to longer, healthier lives. This book teaches you how to shop for and pre- pare food based on these dietary hubs, with recipes for every meal including spiced sweet potato pancakes and baked halibut with mango salsa. Library Tidbits BY CRAIG GRAZIANO New Year, New Menu It may sound insulting, but the Idiot's Guide series is a fantastic resource for seemingly daunting sub- jects. Gluten-Free Eating is a perfect example. The book explains what gluten is, where it can be found, and what gluten-free grains you can substitute when preparing meals. The book extends its expertise to restaurants, entertaining others, and managing the diet for children as well, while still providing all sorts of mouth-watering recipes such as salmon corn chowder and lemon poppy seed scones. Request these items through our library catalog and have them sent to your closest branch. Happy New Year and Bon Appétit!
