Pack a few snacks, throw in an extra water bottle for the dwindling summer heat and keep expectations low. Sometimes the best part of the hike is the stick they find or the rock they insist on carry- ing the whole way. And if you don't make it very far, that still counts too. Consider it a nice way to shake off a long week at school. Government Island Trail (Stafford) Drive from FXBG: 30 minutes • Length: 1.7 miles • Type: Loop Government Island is a unique mix of history and nature. Once the quarry site that supplied Aquia sandstone for the construction of the White House and the U.S. Capitol, it now offers a 1-mile walk- ing trail with an elevated boardwalk winding through creeks, wet- lands and marsh. There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife, keeping things interesting for little hikers along the way. Good to know: Fishing is not permitted from the island, and shade is limited in some areas. August sun is strong, so bring plenty of water. Motts Run Reservoir Trails Government Island Trail Crow's Nest Point Trail Motts Run Reservoir Trails (FXBG) Drive from FXBG: 20 minutes Length: Varies • Type: Varies If your kids love water views, this one is always a win. Motts Run offers a mix of hiking and biking trails for all ages and skill levels, with plenty of places to stop, snack and take in the scenery. There are also options for fishing, boating and kaya- king, plus a nature center with hands-on exhibits kids love. Good to know: Swimming and wading are not allowed. The reservoir is closed Tues- days and Wednesdays but open seasonally through October, so there's still plenty of time to visit before it closes for the season. Crow's Nest Point Trail (Stafford) Drive from FXBG: 30 minutes • Length: 5.6 miles • Type: Out & Back If you're looking for something more peaceful and a little more adventurous, Crow's Nest is worth the drive. The trail follows an old road bed through wooded ridgelines and down to a quiet floodplain where Potomac Creek and Accokeek Creek meet, ending at a scenic overlook bench. It feels more rugged and natural than most local parks, making it a great fit for older kids who want a real hike without anything too strenuous. Good to know: This area is more natural and less developed, so plan ahead with extra water and sun protection. Consider going earlier in the day to beat the heat.
