8 Fredericksburg Parent and Family • August 2026 Whether you're squeezing in one last summer adventure before the first bell or looking for a fresh way to unwind once homework and after-school activities kick in, a family hike is a great reset. I've found that some of our best afternoons happen when we skip the drive straight home after pickup and head to a trail instead. There's something about that after-school funk, the backpack drop, the "how was your day" that gets a one-word answer, that a little time outside just fixes. Fresh air and moving legs seem to do more than any quiet activity or pep talk ever could. Here are five easy, kid- friendly hikes for little hikers and big kids alike. to Try Before (or After) the School Bell Rings Rappahannock River Heritage Trail (FXBG) Drive from FXBG: 10 minutes Length: 1.6 miles • Type: Out & Back The Heritage Trail is a go-to for families looking for a short stroll. The paved path runs along the river and is mostly flat, which makes it great for kids who want to walk, run or even bring a scooter or bike. You can hop on and off at different points, so it's easy to customize how far you go depending on everyone's energy level. Good to know: Late summer heat can make the paved sections warm underfoot, so an early morning or late evening walk keeps things com- fortable. Alum Spring Park Loop (FXBG) Drive from FXBG: 10 minutes Length: 1 mile • Type: Loop Alum Spring Park feels like a hidden escape tucked right in the city. The trails are short and manageable, winding alongside a creek with a footbridge and spots where kids can stop, throw rocks or just explore. This is a great first hike option, especially with the play- ground nearby, giving kids a mix of structure and free play. Good to know: The creek is a nice way to cool off on a hot August afternoon, but water levels can be low this time of year, so plan footwear accordingly.
