With more than 155 million Americans visi ng an emer- gency department each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preven on (CDC), mely access to care is cri cal. At the Emergency Department (ER) at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, part of HCA Virginia, speed and efficiency are built into every aspect of pa ent care. Under the leadership of ER Medical Director Dr. Nazir Adam, who also sits on the Medical Execu ve Commi ee, the team has created a dedicated system to track every step of a pa ent's care. That means that staff document how fast a pa ent sees a physician, how quickly nurses put in orders, how long before medica- ons are given, how quickly radiology arrives and so on. That level of data and accountability, in conjunc on with daily reviews, ensures the team is con nually improving response mes and pa ent care. The success of this data-driven approach is reflected in the Spotsylvania Re- gional Medical Center ER's response mes. For the past three years, they have averaged just 10 minutes from a pa ent's arrival me to seeing a physician, something unheard of in the majority of emergency departments. For pa ents with more cri cal concerns, such as chest pain, shortness of breath or neurolog- ical symptoms, care begins even sooner and is o en immediate. In addi on to closely tracking metrics, the team emphasizes organiza on in order to move pa ents safely and quickly through care.
