WRITTEN BY LEIGH ANNE VAN DOREN letter to reader Leigh Anne Van Doren, Frederickburg Parent and Family publisher Kazoos, Cats and Mammograms This October, I'm looking forward to our amazing lineup of fall events created through our 10 -year partnership with the Scarecrow Fest. We are very proud that we are the founding partners of this quirky series of family events along with the Rappahannock Rotary Club, Fredericksburg Main Street and the Fredericksburg Police Department. Other amazing team members for Scarecrow Fest include the Fredericksburg Economic Development and Tourism Department, Fredericksburg Parks and Rec, the City of Fredericksburg, Legacy Clothing & Gifts and Fraser Wood. The newest addition to our October lineup is the October 12th Canal Quarter Cat Tour, beginning at Haley's Honey Meadery at 1 pm, ending at Canal Quarter Arts, and featuring 15+ neighborhood cats. Neighborhood cat owners will show you their cats and you will enjoy the history and architecture of an unsung part of the city. I would like to thank the Historic Fredericksburg Foundation for providing the research materi- als for the tour talk, the Squishy Face Crew for sponsoring the kitten adoption event, and the artists at Canal Quarter Arts for the cat art that will be for sale. Even more fun is our greatly expanded Scarecrow Fest Costume Stroll. Thanks to the generosity of Robert B. Payne Heating & Air, the official King/Queen Halloween sponsor for the stroll, Let's Smile Dental, Nest Realty Fredericksburg, DoorStep Urgent Care, Heartcare Financials, the Alpine Chef and Freddy's Donuts, the event will now include trick or treat bags, 6 treat tables, WGRQ-FM SuperHits 95.9, coffee, donuts and cookies for families, a touch-a-truck area, a kazoo band, and the University of Mary Washington Eagle Pipe Band. Park at the parking garage on the 600 Sophia Street parking garage around 8:15, walk 3 minutes to the VRE lot to gather by 8:30 am. At 9:30 am, everyone is welcome to follow the music playing hearse from the VRE Parking Lot B to Market Square and then go on to the 10 am Treats on the Street. End your morning at the Halloween Farmers Market at Hurkamp Park until 1 pm. #seeyou- forthestroll. Finally, celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October has a newly personal angle for me this year. On January 4th I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I owe my early diagnosis and relatively easy recovery to a regular mammogram, a tal- ented radiologist, and the use of artificial intelligence to identify anomalies in the scan from my previous mammogram. I owe my life to Mosaic Healthcare for taking me as a new patient and scheduling the mammogram, and to the Rappahannock Rotary Club for inviting Mosaic Health Care to present at the October 2023 satellite club meeting. I urge all of you to keep up with your regularly scheduled mammograms. They are key to early identification and treatment. Leigh Anne
