www.FredericksburgParent.NET 7 In "The Lollipop Tree" children will learn about strength and resilience, with the book becoming an endear- ing part of their collections. The first book by author Karen Schaufeld, of Leesburg, Va., which was released in 2013, tells the story of a strong and proud little tree that was known for its stature and growing branches. When a storm leaves the tree scarred, it must persevere to regain its strength and beauty. "Larry and Bob" is the story of a friendship between a bald eagle and a smallmouth bass. When they meet, it changes both of them. "How to Eat a Peach" is about a squirrel with a passion for peaches. The problem is that a farmer and a wall stand between the squirrel and his goal of getting the peaches he wants. The tale will take children on a journey of determination—and an unexpected change of heart. "Vultures, A Love Story" is the tale of a vulture born with a limp and an unusual feather sticking up from his bald head. The story is about appreciating our differ- ences and skills and realizing everyone deserves love. Schaufeld's stories are unique and intriguing for children and the adults who read to them. An added bonus is that these books teach lessons in a way that are interesting and easily understood by children. A seed was planted for Schaufeld's imagination to grow when she was diagnosed with scarlet fever in the second grade. Isolated in her room for a couple of weeks, she enjoyed books and television stories. Ironically, it turned out to be one of the happiest times in her childhood, a world full of imagination, stories, and dreams. Schaufeld feels it's important to use more advanced vocabulary than is usually found in most children's books. When kids hear and read the words out loud, they develop better language skills. She shares her stories for others to read to their children, which reminds her of reading to her own children when they were young. A philanthropist, lawyer, and award-winning author, the mom of three now grown children lives with her husband and several dogs. She supports causes having to do with education, food insecurity, shelter, healthcare, and advancing the arts. Schaufeld's free time is spent walking, cycling, watching movies, and playing Candy Crush. Schaufeld, who has two bachelor of arts degrees in English and Government from Lehigh University, also received a juris doctor- ate at George Washington University.
