www.FredericksburgParent.NET 29 Master Y.J. Kim's Martial Arts Center took top prize in Fredericksburg Parent & Family magazine's Family Favorites for Day Camps. Readers selected their choices and also gave top picks to Fredericksburg Academy, Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation, Christian Youth Theatre (CYT) Fredericksburg, and Rappahannock Area YMCA. The Martial Arts Center offers classes for kids, families, Tiny Tigers & Little Tigers and seniors (age 65 plus), as well as those with special needs. Kids can enjoy summer camp in a fun, safe, and educational environment, and the professional staff, who are experts in their field, work with children throughout the year. There's so much for youngsters to do, from daily martial arts classes and sports to games and arts and crafts. The martial arts classes include uniforms and self-defense training. A well- rounded program, there's also swimming, bowling, visits to the library, local farms and parks, a movie, roller skating, and more. Discounts are available for families enrolling more than one child. The camp offers weekly and daily rates, and there's the added convenience of early and late care (6am to 7pm.). The 10,000-square-foot facility contains modern equipment and is custom-designed with stu- dents in mind. Master Y.J. Kim is internationally recognized for his taekwondo skills and teach- ing methods. He has numerous credentials, recognitions, and certificates. Master Kim holds a bachelor of science degree in sports science and majored in taekwondo at Dankook University in South Korea. His background includes receiv- ing a gold medal in sparring at the 2004 World Taekwondo Championship. He served as the coach of the Korea National Team at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championship and as coach of the Korea National Team/Umpire for the 2011 Asia Taekwondo Championship. All instructors have a high level of martial arts skills and a passion for sharing their knowledge with students. Master Y.J. WRITTEN BY LENORA KRUK-MULLANAPHY The winner of the top prize in Fredericksburg Parent & Family magazine's Private School category is Fredericksburg Academy. The magazine's readers also voted for other area private schools, including Fredericksburg Christian School, Brompton Community School, and Holy Cross Academy. Fredericksburg Academy, which is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, is for ages three through 12th grade and boasts small class size with individualized instruc- tion. Focused on nature-based learning on 44 acres, students also learn from experiential travel and field experiences. With a foundation of being a safe and compassionate community, teaching is thoughtful, persistent, respectful, and passionate. Its diversity of thought and people inspire critical thinking and self- knowledge. The school's belief includes strength and resilience that are cultivated through achievement and mistakes, joy, and disappointment. Opportunities in the arts, athletics, leadership, and citizenship help students define their paths. In general, the school maintains a seven-to-one student-to- faculty ratio with an average of 12 students per class. All of Fredericksburg Academy's students have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities. When it comes to athletics, Fredericksburg Academy's program consists of 26 teams covering seven sports, including middle school and varsity sports teams.
