Kayla Savage and Cassaundra Drew Murray saw a
need in 2019. Moms were struggling to find play-
dates in the community and needed help to meet
other moms and socialize their kids. Together they
created the Mom Squad, originally a Facebook
group that scheduled community playdates at area
playgrounds. The group grew to include mom-
only breakfasts and lunches, recommenda-
tions for area businesses and small business
Saturday posts.
The group was hugely popular until
Covid hit and play dates were cancelled
for the duration. Post-Covid so many moms
begged the group to start scheduling meetups
again that the Mom Squad leaders did a test run of
a Pop-up space. For three months the group oper-
ated a play space, party venue, homeschool space,
and a 2-hour drop-in daycare. A leadership team
of 15 moms, many of whom were former teachers,
planned story times, obstacle courses, a Spanish
language story time, a trunk or treat, Friendsgiving
and a Christmas party and cookie exchange.
Again, the effort was wildly successful. The physi-
cal location however, was too small to support
the group's activities. Moving forward, the group
is creating a nonprofit and looking for a big-
ger space. If you are interested in becoming
involved, or know of suitable space, please pri-
vate message Kayla Savage at the Mom Squad
Facebook group.
