At the start of each new year, Fredericksburg Parent has traditionally published a special issue on what we feel is the key challenge fac- ing families in the upcoming year. For the last three years, picking the topic has been easy: how our community rose to the challenge of surviving a pandemic. Our annual "Stories of Strength" issues were a delight to put together. This past year, our social feeds have been taken over by a growing crisis for families: disappearing and unaffordable daycare. Inspired by our readers, our new theme for this 2024 special issue is family-friendly employers and the daycare crisis. In this issue, which will be distributed all year at our events, we have Part One of Disappearing Daycare: a six-part series on the personal and economic impact of the collapse of affordable childcare in our area. The series will be reported on by our sister nonprofit newsroom, the FXBG Advance. (subscribe for free at fxbgadvance.com) To do our part in contributing to a solution, we are kicking off the Fredericksburg Parent Family Friendly Employer Designation: a special project on finding and recognizing family friendly employer policies at area companies. To be considered for the Fred Parent Family Friendly Employer designation, go to www.fredericksburgparent.net and fill out the application there. There is one for companies to self-report, and one for employees to nominate their employers. Meanwhile, area moms aren't waiting for government or industry to act. Local mom's group, the Mom Squad, is creating a healthy community space for moms, including drop-in daycare. We are proud to profile them, and wish them the very best. . Since this is a special annual issue, our calendar is online only, www.fredericks- burgparent.net/calendar. As always, we welcome event listings from our read- ers. Listings are free. Tackling 2024
