For the 2023-24 school year, there are 1,015 private schools serving 150,383 students. The average private school tui on is $13,819 for elementary schools and $17,647 for high schools. The student to teacher ra o is 11:1. 47% of schools are religiously affi liated. 1. Transfer to a public school on grade-level. Virginia public schools are not required to accept students wishing to transfer from a non-VCPE recognized private school to a local public school on grade-level. Students wishing to transfer from a non-VCPE recog- nized private school to a Virginia public school may be required to repeat the grade level they have most recently completed or pass a placement test(s). 2. Transfer high school credits. Virginia public schools are not re- quired to transfer high school credits from a non-VCPE recognized private school to a Virginia public school. Virginia public schools may require students transferring from a non-VCPE recognized pri- vate school to re-take courses already completed in the non-VCPE recognized private school to sa sfy state gradua on requirements. 3. Apply for certain government (federal and state) jobs. There are many jobs in the public sector which require job applicants to demonstrate proof of gradua on from a state recognized accredited high school to be considered for em- ployment. 4. Enroll in ins tu ons of higher educa on. In many cases, students who have graduated from non-VCPE recognized private schools have been required to complete extensive placement test- ing or a end and complete a GED program to enroll in ins tu ons of higher educa on. The Virginia Council for Private Educa on (VCPE), a private umbrella organiza on of associa ons whose membership is comprised of VCPE approved accredi ng as- socia ons, responsible for accredi ng Virginia private schools. VCPE's authority to establish this process is authorized by the Code of Virginia in sec on 22.1-19 and further in the Virginia Administra ve Code of Regula ons (Sec on A). For a Virginia private school to be recognized as an accredited private school by the Commonwealth of Virginia, the private school must have its accredita on recognized by VCPE through the school's accredita on with a VCPE approved accredi ng associa on.
