In my opinion, of all the editorial Fredericksburg Parent has run over the past 23
years, the Rappahannock Area Community Board's (RACSB) special sections on
how to have tough conversations with your teens in November of 2022, and this
November's special section on how to build resilience in your children are the most
important, timely and crucial articles for parents we have ever published.
When I began Fredericksburg Parent in January of 2000, it was because I was
lonely and isolated in my new role as a mom. In my gut, I knew that was dangerous
for both me and my new baby. RACSB confirms that I was right to be concerned.
Resilience, and the ability to overcome hard things in our lives is built through the
strength of our relationships. This special 8 page section walks parents through how
to build connections, how to teach relationship building skills to their children, and
the 9 things children need to be resilient. Please read and share with other parents
in your life.
Also in this issue, we feature local opportunities to build healthy habits and connec-
tions through running as a family (check out the 31st YMCA Turkey Trot, Girls on
the Run and the Healthy Kids Run Series on page 15 ). Debra Caffrey, our Practical
Pantry columnist weighs in on ways to make space in your kitchen before you
attempt to make Thanksgiving Dinner, and Ask Mom helps you deal with an anxious
toddler. Emily Freehling, our popular expert interviewer, brings us two pieces: Let's
Smile Dental walks you through how important dental care is–especially after all
that Halloween candy, and Fredericksburg Academy shares their expertise on using
the outdoors as a classroom.
In other Fred Parent nonprofit news, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library served
1800 children ages 0-5 in November with free books mailed to their homes, thanks
to the Northern Neck Electric Cooperative's continued commitment to improv-
ing the lives of families in their service area. We held our first "graduation" from
the program at the Howell Library in October. A big thank you to the Central
Rappahannock Library system for hosting us, and helping our graduates get a library
card. To sign up or donate, go to fredericksburgparent.net/dolly.
The FXBG Advance hired its first full time reporter, just in time to provide detailed
coverage of the November 7th elections. Adele Uphaus-Connor is one of our
region's best-known reporters, and has left the Free Lance-Star to serve as the
Managing Editor of the FXBG Advance. Monday through Friday, Adele will be post-
ing hard-news stories about local government and education. I am proud of the role
Fredericksburg Parent Gives played in launching and growing the Advance. To sub-
scribe, go to fxbgadvance.com
