26 Fredericksburg Parent and Family • November 2023 PREVENTION SERVICES Prevention Services Prevention Services at the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board provide a wide array of evidence-based curriculums and best practice initiatives to support healthy lifestyles for youth free of substances and to foster a community of wellness. We also provide general youth substance use prevention (to include alcohol, tobacco/vaping, marijuana/cannabis, OTC/prescriptions, and other drugs), suicide prevention presentations, and prevention of problem gambling and gaming. Parent Check-Ins Education and Support on a Range of Topics Second Step Social/Emotional Education for Pre-K thru Elementary Healthy Alternatives for Little Ones Healthy Lifestyle Education for Pre-K Too Good For Drugs Substance Abuse Awareness and Peer Resistance Skills for Pre-K thru Elementary Media Detective/Media Ready Substance Abuse and Environmental Awareness for Fourth thru Eighth Grade Rappahannock Area Kids on the Block Educational Puppets Lock and Talk Virginia Means Safety and Harm Reduction Initiative to Prevent Suicide Counter Tools Youth Tobacco Use Prevention Initiative Prevention of Problem Gambling and Gaming Education/awareness To request a training or presentation: prevention@rappahannockareacsb.org Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma- informed and Resiliency Trainings To register: https://rappahannockareacsb.org/trainings/ ACE Interface "Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Building Self-Healing Communities" covers how adverse childhood experiences can affect brain development, the ACE Study, and how community resiliency can support those affected by trauma. Training sessions can vary from a 30-minute overview to a 4-hour comprehensive training. Trainings are free and can be brought to your organization. Community Resilience Initiative Course 1: Trauma Informed is a 6-hour course covering NEAR Science, Brain States, and ROLES Strategies for individuals seeking a trauma-informed certification. Community Resilience Initiative Course 2: Trauma Supportive is a 6-hour course that uses the science of resiliency to prevent and address trauma and build culturally and contextually resilient individuals and communities. (Course 1 is a pre-requisition for Course 2) Naloxone Training/Opioid Overdose Reversal To register: https://rappahannockareacsb.org/trainings/ The 60-minute training to community members, professionals, and anyone interested in learning how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose with the administration of naloxone/Narcan. Available virtually or in person. An abbreviated 10 minute "rapid" option is also available for community events. RACSB also Dispenses Free Naloxone/Narcan (with support from VDH). Suicide Prevention Trainings To register: https://rappahannockareacsb.org/trainings/ Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour certification course that teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help someone who is in crisis or experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. Now available virtually and in- person. Our certified instructors teach four versions of the program: A dult (for any adult) Youth (for adults who interact with young people ages 12-25) Higher Education (for students 18 and older, faculty, and administration who work with college students) Public Safety (for law enforcement and others who work in public safety roles) To register: https://rappahannockareacsb.org/trainings/ LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a 2- day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. Participants learn to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and to work with the individual to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. safeTALK is a 3-hour presentation that encourages participants to learn how to prevent suicide by recognizing signs, engaging someone, and connecting them to community resources for additional support.
