Opened in May, the clinic is located at 12101 Carol Lane, Suite 101, off State Route 3 in Spotsylvania County. An Internal Medicine Residency Clinic also opened this year, and is located at 1201 Sam Perry Blvd., Suite 280. The clinics offer a unique patient care experi- ence—patients are actually seen by both a medical resident and a supervising physician faculty mem- ber. Multiple doctors will participate in and review patient treatment plans to ensure delivery of the highest level of care. At the Family Medicine Residency clinic, Helmly says, multiple generations—from babies to grandparents—can benefit from the care of the same medical providers. "We really are excited to take care of whole fami- lies," Helmly says. "That's the model we are hop- ing to grow, because that's what family medicine really is." This model offers convenience to the family— allowing family members to schedule and attend appointments at one location, instead of multiple offices around town. Women can receive pre- natal and gynecological care through the Family Medicine Residency Clinic, which partners with Mary Washington Obstetrics & Gynecology for deliveries. RESIDENTS BRING A FRESH PERSPECTIVE Mary Washington Healthcare sees the Graduate Medical Education pro- gram as a significant benefit to the Fredericksburg region, in part because it can provide a pipeline of future physicians to serve this community as it continues to grow. Helmly points out that patients also stand to benefit from the unique care model of a residency program. "When you're under the care of a resident in a clinic setting, you are actu- ally getting really thorough care," Helmly says. "You've got the resident who sees you and starts thinking through a plan of action, and then you've got the supervising faculty member reviewing every case and looking for new ideas. So your care is getting discussed at a higher level, and your problems will be looked at through multiple eyes." Having just finished medical school, residents also bring with them the most current thinking in medical care. "The latest in evidence-based care is what they are going to be thinking through in taking care of you," Helmly says. Mary Washington Healthcare has designed its Family Medicine Residency program to prioritize the patient experience by making clinical care the center of the program. Treating patients in a continuous clinical environment is sometimes an afterthought in medical residency programs, pushed to the back burner behind hospital rotations. Helmly purposely built Mary Washington's program to ensure residents have an opportunity to build relationships with their patients in the clinic—with the hope that they'll love this important part of medicine enough to make it their career. To help boost continuity in the patient experience, Family Medicine residents will be assigned a clinic day of the week at the start of their three-year residency that will not change over the course of their time here. "We've tried to build the ability for us to have consistency and to have that continu- ity experience for patients so that they really can grow with their doctors through the years, and so that they don't have to re-introduce themselves every single time they come in," she says. "These doctors are really excited to take care of you and to give you their best."
