www.FredericksburgParent.NET 7 Pouches' B O OK NO OK WRITTEN BY LENORA KRUK-MULLANAPHY Carla Mae Jansen Over the years, as a teacher in public and private schools and as a home educator, Jansen devel- oped what she wished she'd had available to her—picture books to introduce new science top- ics. Turtle Trails Publishing makes this literature available to children, as well as providing valu- able tools for parents and educators. In "A Dinosaur Made Me Sneeze" children find out what a T. Rex, a crazy skink and a few out- of-control sneezes have in common. They go on a journey through the rock cycle, which intro- duces changes through the Earth's history, the three different types of rocks and more. Beware of asteroids and volcanoes along this journey! The inspiration to write "A Dinosaur Made Me Sneeze" came 14 years ago when Jansen was teaching eighth-grade science. She wanted to show students a picture book with a funny story to introduce concepts, but there weren't any books like that on the market. With the hustle and bustle of teaching, she didn't have a chance to complete her manu- script. (The busy author, who has five children, a dog, a turtle and a frog, is a certified National Geographic Educator.) More than a dozen years later, she took her notes and original draft, went through many rewrites and created the book. According to Meaghan Jackson, a mother of three children, the book combines so many things that kids love and can relate to, and it explains the rock cycle in a very engaging way. Kinne (I suggest noting who this is here) loves that it rhymes, because it rolls off the tongue when reading. Children can look forward to more of Jansen's books this fall. She is currently working on the "Turtle & Friends" series. This early reader series will take kids on the adventures and conversations between a turtle and his cronies on the Galapagos Islands. "I am a Dinosaur!" -- the first in the series -- is where children meet Turtle and Penguin and hear their debate about who is a dinosaur. Jansen's other books include: • "A Dinosaur Made Me Spill: A Water Cycle Adventure" • "Who Needs a Volcano?" in which children discover ways different animals use volcanoes. • "When Will Cicada Sing?" answers the questions of how many times a cicada molts, how long they live underground and if all of them sing. It's a journey through their life cycle, created for young children. There's plenty to choose from when you shop on the Turtle Trail Publishing website, from hardcover books and PDF eBooks, to PowerPoint eBooks and a Teacher's Guide with bonus science background material. The Stafford County resident began the publishing company in 2020, because she believes the best method to teach children is to share the world with them—whether on an adventure in the jungle or with a book.
