For many people, the option to choose vaccination and boosters for the entire family provided much needed peace of mind. On page 16, we spoke with Mary Chamberlin, public information officer for the Rappahannock Area Health District. She runs the community vaccination center in Central Park. She's been encouraged by the number of families she and her staff have seen and treated and hopes to see it continue. From a mental health standpoint, the social adaptation of children and teens has been a secondary storyline of the pandemic. We caught up with Barbara Barlow, executive director of Mental Health America of Fredericksburg to discuss this topic (page 23). She points to an Early Education Initiative at Harvard University which found that "61% of par- ents reported that their child's social-emotional development had been negatively affected by the pandemic." Within the story, she offers par- ents tips and advice to nurture children back into health emotions and relationships. This ties perfectly into this year's theme for Black History Month, which is Black Health and Wellness. The objective of this year's theme is to pays homage to medical scholars and health care providers who serve in the community and to increase awareness that Black health is dispropor- tionalty affected by enviroment and other negative responses to socio- economic stimuli. As part of honoring Black History Month, we've compiled a list of books you can read with your children that celebrates the contributions of Black American. I hope you'll seek these titles out at the library or where you buy books and celebrate the great shared history we have as Americans. Happy February!
