DIGITAL NETWORK FREDPARENT for savvy moms in the 'burg Fredericksburg Parent and Family Magazine Girl Smarts, a series of workshops designed to motivate, elevate and enhance the inner strength and confidence of our 4th and 5th grade girls, is coming to Fredericksburg Library for three days of workshops August 6, 7, and 8. The workshops will run from 9-1:30 and will cover topics like Body Language, Bullying, Values Identification, Healthy Relationships and Organizing for Middle School. LEARN MORE AT http://bit.ly/girl-smarts Girl Smarts, a program being presented at the 7th Annual National Convention on Girl Bullying and Relational Aggression this month at Las Vegas, is currently in place at seven public schools in Stafford County. Since 2009 the program has supported the growth of close to 800 young ladies, strengthening them as they face their middle school years. You can read about the program as well as seeing testimonials at girlsmarts.net. Space is limited and a tuition of 75 dollars covers all three days of workshops, supplies, and snacks. Transportation is a parent/guardian responsibility as is a bag lunch for each day of the workshops. Passport to Kindergarten Promoting School Readiness Children entering kindergarten vary in their early experiences, skills, knowledge, language, culture and family background. Teachers report 48 percent of children beginning kindergarten struggle with the transition to school. Through the "Passport to Kindergarten" initiative, Smart Beginnings Rappahannock Area is facilitating a connection among early learning centers, preschools, kindergarten staff and parents to foster the kindergarten transition process. READ MORE AT http://bit.ly/kindergarten-passport A Community Transition Steering Committee comprised of school and community agency leaders, retired educators and representatives from early learning centers is building a community-based program to promote continuity from birth to kindergarten. Collaboration among the key players is fundamental in developing and implementing successful transition practices. Smart Beginnings Rappahannock Area is using "Ready Freddy," an evidence-based program from the Office of Early Childhood at the University of Pittsburgh. The Ready Freddy model for quality transition is supported by research on parent engagement, attendance and social emotional readiness. School Dressing Days Looking for a fantastic way to give back? How about providing local low-income families the chance to Back-to-School "shop" for their kids (aged K-12) for FREE!!! School Dressing Days will be held Friday and Saturday, August 9 and 10 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) at 1710 Bragg Road in Fredericksburg from 9 am - 4 pm. Get DETAILS at http://bit.ly/dressing-days Families who pre-register will be given time slots to come and "shop." Other families can come from 3 - 4 pm on Saturday. We will be giving one new outfit (jeans and shirt), new socks and underwear, a backpack, school supplies and toiletries. We will also have gently-used jackets, coats and hoodies and some used shoes to be distributed. No other used clothing this year. The remaining pre-registration will be held Saturday 13, July 2013 from 9:00 am -1:00 pm at the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church. Whether registering in advance or at the event, families must provide verification of their address and one form of ID for each child. Children attending Head Start must have their admission letter by the event.
