www.FredericksburgParent.NET 7 Pouches' community corner Mary's Shelter Sheltering Women and Their Children WRITTEN BY LENORA KRUK-MULLANAPHY Founded in 2006, Mary's Shelter in Fredericksburg has grown from a two-room apartment into a community of six shared homes for up to 18 families. Mary's Shelter provides a Christ-centered program of guidance and support for women (and their children) faced with crisis dur- ing pregnancy. Its mission recognizes that life begins at conception and is worthy of protection. Motivated to make positive changes in their lives, the residents represent all races and religions and, in turn, receive unconditional love and support. More than 400 women have participated in the program, where the pro-life ministry is based on the teachings and love of Christ. Women who have chosen life find an oasis of hope and an enrich- ing future. Kelsi Powell, who was living in her car when she contacted Mary's Shelter a year ago, had lived with family who didn't approve of her pregnancy. After the anxiety of living in her car, she described the shelter as a "breath of fresh air." The residents receive guidance and support with goals, such as: · Cultivating and communicating an awareness of God's love for each individual · Ensuring the health of the mother and child · Inspiring self-respect and personal motivation · Developing confident, loving and positive parenting · Fostering a successful transition to independent living The program offers the expectant mother and her children housing for a maximum of three years to enable her to expand her educa- tion and/or find employment. Residents are paired with a mentor to help with support and encouragement. The program is built to give the mothers the time and tools to work toward their goals, provide for their children and make independent living a reality. There are many ways to help, including participating in Baby Bottle Campaigns, making monetary donations, volunteering and donating material goods, from toilet paper and towels to diapers and gift cards.
