Sugar Rush T he American Heart Association recommends no more than four teaspoons of added sugar per day for kids 1 to 3 years of age, three teaspoons for 4- to 8-years-old and 5 to 8 teaspoons for 9- to 12-year-olds. Yet, American children on average get several times the recommended amount (up to 21 teaspoons for 4- to 8-year-olds!) Reduce sugar consumption by limiting sugary drinks (including juice), desserts, flavored dairy products like sweetened yogurt and sugary cereals. Try more water, fresh fruit and vegetable snacks, and plain yogurt with fresh fruit instead. Choose cereals with less than five grams of sugar per serving and offer fruit as a topping.
