Tip Trim Your Waistline AND Your Wallet T he holidays are over. You squint as you step on the scale with your New Year's resolution to lose weight weighing heavily on your mind. You decide to join a gym with every intention of working out five days a week. That lasts for one month; then it drops down to three days a week; then one and well…life comes calling and you are lucky to make it there once a month. Sound familiar? I've been there! Since December 22, 2010, I've lost 148 pounds and went from couch potato to marathoner. I know from experience that fitness clubs have lots to offer, but if you are trying to trim your budget, I have some suggestions for getting a great workout in less time for far less money. The best gym is right outside your front door. Get some moisture wicking clothing, a good windbreaker, hat, gloves and shoes. (Note: the right shoes can make all the difference and prevent injury. VA Runner, located in Central Park, can fit you for the right pair.) So whether it's walking, running or bicycling make sure to arm yourself with the right gear. Want to weight lift? No problem. Weight lifting actually helps rev your metabolism. Invest in some handheld dumbbells, a set of resistance tubes or bands and an exercise ball. Up for more of a challenge? Add a jump rope and TRX suspension training gear. Pack it all in your car's trunk (and keep it there) along with a yoga mat for stretching and head to the closest track/park where the kids' playground can double as a workout area. I use the platforms on play equipment to do Plyo box jumping exercises. If you still want to take that bootcamp class, you can. Look for a gym that allows you to drop-in for classes. The YMCA offers non-members drop-in access for a nominal fee. That way if you skip a week, you aren't out any money. Support is key for success when shedding pounds and maintaining weight loss. MTM will soon start a trial fun run/walk group. Please email us at mtm@ fredericksburgparent.net for more information. Bring your friends and family along! You are invited to stand out from the crowd. You are invited to discover Fredericksburg Academy. Founded in 1992 by parents in search of the ideal school for their children, Fredericksburg Academy is the area's only independent, nonsectarian, college preparatory school for 3-year-old prekindergarten through grade 12. Our students are intellectually curious problemsolvers who are not afraid to take risks in the classroom, on the stage, and on the playing field. They are caring citizens and responsible leaders. If you feel that your child would thrive in our uniquely nurturing and challenging learning community, please contact us to schedule your personal visit to campus today. If cost is a barrier for your family, need-based financial aid is available. Thirty percent of our students receive financial aid. 540.898.0020 fredericksburgacademy.org admission@fredericksburgacademy.org facebook.com/fredericksburgacademy www.fredericksburgparent.NET 21
