Hospice Support Opens Healing Garden

June 20, 2013

hospice-suppt-careFredericksburg, VA—On Thursday, June 27th, Hospice Support Care will host the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours Event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This event sponsored by Blue and Gray Brewery, The Copper Fox Distillery, Lifepoint and the Fredericksburg Jazz Collective will be the first event to celebrate the Healing Garden's opening.

Hospice Support Care (HSC) has created a Healing Garden for bereaved families and individuals receiving HSC grief services at the Harbor House Bereavement and Training Center located at 2103 Washington Avenue in Fredericksburg. The Healing Garden was built with funds provided by the Duff McDuff Green Jr. Fund of the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region and in-kind donations from local contractors and volunteers.

The Healing Garden consists of a waterfall and pond surrounded by stone seating walls and patios. The lush and verdant environment is designed to provide respite to those who are grieving a serious illness or significant loss. Families and individuals will visit the Healing Garden and attend support groups to express their grief in a setting designed with horticultural therapy elements. The Healing Garden's creation was inspired by a grieving child who drew a picture showing where she wishes she could go when she feels sad about the loss of her father.

Hospice Support Care initiated the project in partnership with the Virginia Master Gardeners Association in August 2012. As the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund was awarded to HSC to assist the project, requests were granted over the past 10 months for in-kind donations of labor and materials from Arrowood Landscape, Ponshop Studio, Roxbury Farm and Gardens, Greystone Masonry, Rowe Concrete, Rick Carney Irrigation, Techo Bloc, VA Water Gardens, The Stone Center of Virginia, Durrette Construction, AB Kearns, Villafuerte Masonry, Mitchell Tree Service, White Landscaping, Fredericksburg Fencing, Aquarius, Turf, Theros Rentals and Labor Finders.

Since 1981, HSC has been providing non-medical support, without charge, to those experiencing the impact of a life altering or terminal illness. Our trained volunteers provide respite care and other services weekly to patients in the Greater Fredericksburg region.

Photographs and video of the project are available for release. Follow this link for a You Tube video link of the 3D walkthrough design of the garden. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz-BKwZNN4A&feature=youtu.be
