When I started this writing adventure a dear friend suggested I keep a notebook of ideas that popped into my head. It was a great suggestion and I'm a natural born list maker so it was a match made in heaven!
It's also a really good idea because I have a mind like a plastic colander...stuff leaves as fast as it's poured in!
The other day I opened up one of my many little notebooks and found a page of blog ideas. For the life of me I can't remember what in blazes I was referring to. Here are a few...maybe someone out there will know what I meant?!
Lottery commercial? Other than wanting to win the lottery I can't think of what that would mean!
Sicko? Not only is that one disturbing but I can't even vaguely remember the context.
Ugh!? That could mean a lot of things...it's my most commonly uttered phrase.
The good thing is that as I went page by page through my little notebook #1, I found sermon notes and quotes and some short journal-like entries that reminded me of the many blessings I have.
You can assume from this blog that my memory is not so great right now...big and little things tend to get lost in the confounding amount of stuff I need to deal with daily. It was good to be reminded that God is at work...He is blessing me even as I walk through my valley. And I can see now that my valley has a decidedly upward slant to it. That is encouraging!
One of my favorite notebooks is full of a numbered list of things I'm thankful for. I started this one after reading Ann Voskamp's book One Thousand Gifts. Here are some of my thankful things:
#11 the sound of a soccer ball being booted
#15 new school supplies
#19 mums and pumpkins
#45 coloring with brand new crayons
#57 listening to my children laughing together
#62 date nights with my sons
#91 painting little tiny fingernails with my girlies
#167 first cup of hot cocoa in a Christmas mug
#288 an encouraging text at just the right time
#312 my oldest daughter sitting on my bed late at night just to talk
#411 great conversations with my oldest son
#478 neighbors who love my kids
#523 faithful friends
Even as I sit here, I can think of at least 10 more things to add to my list. I've not been as good at keeping up with my list making as I'd like...I forget to be thankful so easily. In this very difficult single parent life, I've found that I'm much happier and peaceful when I focus on the things I can be thankful for rather than the things that overwhelm and concern me.
Since I can't really run away from all the nuttiness of this life, I'm learning to choose thankfulness...and I'm finding that there is a lot to be grateful for in my life!
So I guess I won't be able to write a blog entitled "sicko" which is probably a very good thing...and maybe someday I'll figure out the other baffling notes I've made, but until then, there are plenty of other things to write about and there are certainly more blessing lists to make!
#1222 another blog written =)
