Let's Talk Baby Names.

May 31, 2013

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a fabulous and relaxing holiday. I feel like we are just now creeping back into our regular routines. Thank goodness! In addition to all of December's festivities and merriment, Archer was sick with back-to-back illnesses. I myself, came down with that wicked cold that's been going around. Yikes! Believe me, I became very familiar with the netti pot very quickly.

In the midst of all of that mess, I had my 20 week ultrasound right around Christmas. As I've mentioned earlier, we were super excited not to find out the gender of the baby. While not the popular choice, we love the idea of keeping it a secret. How exciting!

So...the ultrasound technician totally slipped up and told us the baby's gender. Oops!

Yeah, that was... unexpected. Sooooo, we're having another BOY! Whooohooo! We are super excited to be giving Archer a little brother so close in age. How fun!

That being said, let's talk names. My husband and I are those weirdos who have the names they like picked out within a week of seeing a positive pregnancy test. Most of my friends either wait until finding out the gender before discussing names, or they take a much longer time deciding. One of the biggest factors for me is finding a name that's not too common, but not too strange either. It's a fine balance, friends. I want the name to be unique but not something that will keep him from getting an interview, in the future. Oh, and easy to spell. The name has to be relatively easy for him, his friends, and his teachers to spell.

A friend once told me that if you can find the name in a, "Pottery Barn Kid's" catalog then it should be removed from the short list immediately. Translation: It's becoming too popular. I thought that was an interesting way to narrow the field a bit.

How about you guys? What are your baby name rules? How long did it take you all to decide on your baby name? Any cute tricks like my friend has? What are some of your favorite names? I tend to be partial to names that start with a vowel: Elias, Ezra, Avery, Alessandra...

P.s. In case you were wondering, we've decided to name that baby Maddox. It's not too common, not too strange, and pretty easy to spell. Bonus: he gets an "x" in his name. How cool is that??

P.s.s If Maddox had been a girl he would have been a Felicity. I just love that name!
