The Top Chef Winner Is...

cooking_club.jpgWere you as excited as I was when you heard that our very own “Foode” chef, Joy Crump, will be starring in the Bravo series “Top Chef” airing October 15?  Take that culinary inspiration to become the executive chef in your kitchen, and make your kid the assistant!

According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, there are several benefits to cooking with your kids, which can include bonding, improving cultural awareness, learning how to follow directions, basic math skills, and building self-confidence.  There is something for your two year old all the way up to your tween to do in the kitchen!  Click here for more information.

We have partnered with Jr. Champion Chefs of Fredericksburg to bring some cooking classes to you and your child.  In this five week series, your 8 – 16 year old will learn hands on what it means to be a culinary genius!   Here is a brief itinerary of what they will learn:

  • Week 1 -All About Fruit: They will learn proper hand placement and knife safety. They are going to make a delicious fruit salsa and homemade cinnamon chips.
  • Week 2 - Breakfast Items: They will learn the different measuring utensils and proper usage. They’ll be making homemade pancakes with a delicious raspberry butter cream.  Champions are shown how to cook bacon in the oven with no mess
  • Week 3 - Healthy Snacks: They will make yummy zucchini muffins and a fruit smoothie.
  • Week 4 - Salads and a homemade vinaigrette: Champions will be assembling a large salad while focusing on food presentation. They will practice slicing meats and vegetables, and boiling eggs properly. A lesson on properly poaching chicken and a lesson on cross-contamination will also be provided. Kids will also be instructed how to create a homemade vinaigrette dressing.
  • Week 5 - Slicing and Dicing: This class is designed to teach kids how to properly slice and dice onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli and cucumbers. The kids will create a delicious homemade vegetable dip for their vegetables. To top it off the kids will make tres leches cake!

Sessions start 9/30 – 10/28, 11/4 – 12/2 or 12/9 – 1/6.  Cost is $125, for both Fredericksburg resident and non-residents for five weeks of instruction.  Includes supplies.

This class helps not only your child but YOU!  They can help take some of the kitchen work off you by making healthy informed choices when shopping, making decisions on meal prep, packing their lunches or making after school snacks.  Who knows, they might be prepping dinner when you get home (how awesome would that be?).

And Doctor Yum has some GREAT recipe inspiration for the whole family, so head over to her website and sign up for her Cooking Club newsletter by clicking here.  Fresh, seasonal recipes that have been kid-tested and approved, sent right to your inbox!

Who knows, that little bit of time spent in the kitchen with you could lead them to be the next challenger on “Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off” on Food Network!  Well, a parent can dream, right?!
