FRIENDS OF CHATHAM HOSTS PLEIN AIR ART DAY AT CHATHAM MANOR
October 17, 2015
Stafford, VA – Friends of Chatham announces that it is holding a Plein Air* Art Day on October 17th, from 10 am until 2 pm. Approximately, 20 local artists and photographers will spread out on the grounds of Chatham to create their special work of art using our favorite venue as their subject.
Local artist, Cathy Ambrose Smith from the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts’ Youth Outreach Program will also be available with art supplies on the grounds of Chatham to offer young visitors the opportunity to try their hand at their own Plein Air drawing.
Join the fun! Come by and watch the artists and photographers at work and chat with them about their art. Rain or shine, but we’re hoping for a lovely day for all!
Chatham Manor and its grounds and outbuildings are located at 120 Chatham Lane in Stafford, Virginia just across the river from the City of Fredericksburg. Chatham, a historic plantation home and a hospital, headquarters, and communication center during the Civil War battle of Fredericksburg, now serves as the headquarters for the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania National Military Park. Chatham Manor is open daily and will be open during the event. Park volunteers give tours of the buildings. There is also a 12 minute film on the history of Chatham and a 32 minute film that explains the Fredericksburg civilian experience during the Civil War.
Refreshments will be served by Friends of Chatham in the Summer House for artists, photographers and visitors alike.
*plein-air – denoting or in the manner of a 19th-century style of painting outdoors, or with a strong sense of the open air, that became a central feature of French impressionism.
