Empty Nest Ahead?

November 27, 2013

So much gratitude for so many things. Right at the top of my list are Teen Spirit and La Principessa. Even when they’re driving me right around the bend into my own special brand of whack-a-doodle, I love them beyond measure. And Thanksgiving is one more day to let them know that.

But I’d also like to let everyone know that I will be tested mightily this year. Probably into a thanks-heaving, sniffly mess. Teen Spirit is hosting his first Friends-giving celebration this weekend. Sure it’s at our house. And yes, I’ll be doing a lot of the heavier lifting with the preparations. Part of me is torn between the desire to go all-in and help versus the primal urge to flee and hope no turkey-related misdemeanors go down on the premises.

But it’s not turkey and teens unleashed that gets me. The heaving lurks because this gathering has struck me as the clearest reminder yet that he will be flying the nest in the not too distant future. So in the spirit of thankfulness for my spawn, now’s the time to dig into an idea that’s been percolating for awhile. He and I will cook together for his friends this weekend, and just maybe, I can share a few cooking tips and general lifetime observations with him. Maybe I can coax him to cook with me a few more times over the next several months and really grab that opportunity to whisper in his ear while he still lives under my roof. Even if I have to stand on a chair now to reach his ear. There are still little things I want to underline before we launch him into the world.

I’ll post every so often about this little experiment in escorting him those last few yards over the finish line into semi-adulthood. Watch this space for the occasional Failure to Lunch posts, coming soon.
