Just Keep Moving

I've often heard “If you aren't moving forward, then you are sliding down hill”. I'm finding that statement interesting at this point in my weight loss. I've met my personal goal weight and my surgeon's initial goal weight, so technically it's time to “stand still”. However, to reach a “healthy” BMI I need to lose another 12 pounds allowing me a new weight goal to work towards. My surgeon has given me the go ahead to keep losing, as I will probably gain 5% of my weight back when I go into maintenance mode (which technically means losing 20 lbs to stay in a healthy BMI range).

moving forward 2My father has always encouraged me to “keep moving” through my weight gains and losses. His belief is that being physical, even in the slightest, is better than being stagnant. During this weight loss journey I've embraced his philosophy and found a love for fitness and running (which is definitely about moving). I continue to train and plan to run a 10K in October in celebration of my birthday. But that's as far as my plan goes. Once I reach that fitness goal, I really don't know what will be next. This is weird for me, I'm a planner (I love project time lines, calendars, and to-do lists). So not planning six months in advance is very different for me. Almost as different as not wanting to eat all the time!

Of course, running three days a week for an hour is burning a lot of calories and my weight has dropped below the 150 lb goal originally set by my surgeon. I could increase my calorie intake (currently 1000 – 1200 calories per day) as I continue to train for the 10K this fall and not lose any more weight. However, I like the idea of saying I have a healthy BMI. It's so easy for me to get caught up in labels sometimes. Am I not healthy because my BMI is 27 instead of 25? I can run six miles without stopping, my blood pressure is fantastic and my asthma is under control. That all sounds pretty darn healthy.

I don't think I'm alone in these thoughts on “what is healthy” and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to voice them here. Feel free to share your opinions on what you think is “healthy” as well.
